Dating convention:
The most popular year system in use is dynastic, in that it relates to the ascension of the current ruler. In the case of the beginning of this campaign, it has been 161 years since the death of XXXXX and the rise of Queen Absinthe to the Dragon Throne. So in technical terms, this year is the 161th Year of Absinthe, or 161YA in shorter notation.
The dwarves, in a nod to the prevalent dynastic system, record the ruler using an archaic counting system. Empress Absinthe is the 128th High Dragon, and as such this year is written as CXXVIII 161. This system avoids confusion and facilitates record keeping, two notable advantages in the minds of most dwarves.
The elves have an unbroken system of years to recount history. By their reckoning, we are in year 21,103 since recorded history began.
